Dredging Study Visit To China
Posted on : 26 Nov 2015

A delegation led by the Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communications, Sarawak (MIDCom), Dato Sri Michael Manyin, was in Shanghai on 23/11/2015 to look into the possible design and method of the proposed dredging of the Sarawak River under the 11th Malaysia Plan (2016 – 2020). “The objective of the dredging is to increase the draught of the Sarawak River to between 12 and 14 meters with high tide which is of international standard to allow bigger cargo and cruise vessels to call on Kuching port,” said Manyin at a meeting with Mr Wu Xingyuan, Chief Engineer of China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) which carried out the original study of the proposed dredging in 1996/1997. The delegation later also visited the new Shanghai Yangshan Deepwater Port, which is the world’s number one port for containers handling.
