Briefing on Guidelines Regarding the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of Container Carrying Cargo

On May 17 2016, Kuching Port Authority organized a briefing session on “Guidelines Regarding the Verified Gross Mass” (VGM) of Container Carrying Cargo. It was conducted by marine Department, Sarawak.

The amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Regulation V1/2 and the adoption of MSC. 1/Cir.1475 is to obtain an accurate gross weight of packed containers that are moved through the supply chain prior to loading on board the ship.

Effective 1st July 2016, all packed containers are required to have a verified gross weight declared by shippers. This is a Global IMO SLOAS mandatory regulatory requirement. VGM is used for vessel planning and safe stowage.

The briefing session was attended by 101 participants from the shipping communities (shipping agents, freight forwarders, shippers and haulage companies).

Shippers are required to determine method used to obtain VGM of their containers based on the guidelines by MSC. 1/Circ.1475 and to submit their companies’ registration to Marine Department.

Kuching Port Authority took the opportunity to brief participants on the port weighing facility which are available for shippers to register VGM of export containers.
